We all know that the MMO Genre lacks science fiction influenced games, apart from the very successful Anarchy Online, the less known Neocron or one of the space simulations like Eve Online. In the next 2 years at least 2 games are trying to break through and challenge Anarchy Online for the throne of the science fiction genre: Face of Mankind and Fallen Earth.

We had the chance to have a chat with James Hettinger of Icarus Studios about their post-apocalyptic science fiction title Fallen Earth.

MMOG Hell: For completeness of the Interview, please state your name and position.
James: James Hettinger, CEO and co-founder of Icarus Studios.

MMOG Hell: Why did you at Icarus Studios decide to enter the MMO Market?
James: We love MMOs, a game is a social experience by nature. The team and myself have played and created some for over 15 years now.

MMOG Hell: What Games and Movies inspired you? (Yes, I'm thinking about Fallout and Mad Max)
James: Mad Max of course, but also the Planet of the Apes movies, LoganÆs Run, The Omega Man, as well as some recent films
such as The Postman and Waterworld. And of course there are the lesser known jewels like "Le Dernier Combat", Luc BessonÆs first feature.

MMOG Hell: What would be your own reasons to play Fallen Earth, what will differentiate it from other MMORPGs?
James: Fallen Earth gives me no limits in game play. No predefined class templates, allowing for unlimited possibilities in character growth.
Having played MMORPGs for over 10 years, I wanted to create a fresh new game with all the features I thought were lacking in current MMOGS.
I like elves, dwarves and magic, but I also wanted a change and thought others would too...

MMOG Hell: Can you tell anything about PvP? Will Fallen Earth be a PvP+ or PvP- Game?
James: We will have PvP game play offered, but on dedicated servers in order not to bother non PvP players.

MMOG Hell: What Races will be available for the Player? Humans of course, and then - Mutants?
James: Humans will be available, with many features to customize your character's unique look and feel at the beginning of the game or through game play
((hundreds of pieces of clothing, tattoos, piercings, etc...). But technically everybody in Fallen Earth will be a mutant... 150 years of genetic research and environmental degradation...
will have its consequences...

MMOG Hell: Will it be possible to mutate? If yes, how will that happen, and how does it affect game play?
James: Yes, players will be able to mutate. Most mutations will be caused by genetic manipulation and uncovered via missions and game play.
These mutations will trigger manifestation of latent abilities.

MMOG Hell: How much can you tell us about crafting in Fallen Earth? Weapons, Cars, Nuclear Warheads?
James: Players will be able to create and manage a very wide variety of buildings, equipment, technical items, food elements....
Such player created elements will alter game play and form an integral part of the game.

MMOG Hell: I read about Cars, so will there be Cars in Fallen Earth?
James: Yes, there will be vehicles players will be able to "ride in" or drive. Some might be mechanical like cars, others might be biological like creatures...

MMOG Hell: What does social structure look like? Family system? Clans, Guilds, Factions?
James: Fallen Earth has a number of NPC affiliations (CHOTA, Lightbearers, etc..). Players will be able to mingle and interact
with these affiliations. Each of them will have specific missions associated with their style and strategy to reclaim
the Fallen Earth.

MMOG Hell: Could you tell a little more about The Enclave?
James: The Enclave is populated with pockets of survivors (the affiliation groups), gathered in outposts and former towns around the Grand Canyon.
The Grand Canyon was chosen by survivors for its the easy access to water and electricity from the Hoover Dam.
It's also fairly isolated from the major cities and disease centers. As Fallen Earth expands, other enclaves around the area or on our planet will be uncovered...

Thanks for taking the time!
